Water is a chemical substance with the chemical formula H2O. Its molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms connected by covalent bonds. Water is a liquid at ambient conditions, but it often co-exists on Earth with its solid state, ice, and gaseous state, water vapor or steam.

Water covers 70.9% of the Earth's surface, and is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, it is found mostly in oceans and other large water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Oceans hold 97% of surface water, glaciers and polar ice caps 2.4%, and other land surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds 0.6%. A very small amount of the Earth's water is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.

Water on Earth moves continually through a cycle of evaporation or transpiration (evapotranspiration), precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Over land, evaporation and transpiration contribute to the precipitation over land.

Clean drinking water is essential to human and other lifeforms. Access to safe drinking water has improved steadily and substantially over the last decades in almost every part of the world. There is a clear correlation between access to safe water and GDP per capita. However, some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability. A recent report (November 2009) suggests that by 2030, in some developing regions of the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50%. Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Approximately 70% of freshwater is consumed by agriculture.

What to do with water heater and water softner when draining water from plumbing?
Q. Hello! I may have a problem with water hammer or pockets of air or whatever in my plumbing system. In order to troubleshoot, I want to drain the water from the pipes for the whole house and then refill it. What should I do with the water in water heater and water softner? Do I drain the water heater and water softner? Just turn power off on my Kenmore water softner? or use bypass valve? Thanks for your time!

A. turn off the heater. shut the valve to prevent siphoning. by-pass the softener. install water hammer devices sold at your hardware store. you may need a few if four house is big. if you need to you can use compression fittings or tiger gripps.

water tower how water towers work or distribute the water in a city?
Q. I know in cities are tap water comes from a water tower but how does a water tower work.Where does the water tower get water from? How does the pump work? What distribute the water or keep the water pressure at the right level?

A. The city pumps water up into the water tower. The city water system then supplies water from the tower, which, because of it's height, provides sufficient water pressure to all the outlets. The tower capacity must be large enough not to drop sufficiently to prevent insufficient pressure at all outlets.

What can I do for water pipes that make a "chunk, chunk" sound when the water is running?
Q. I have city supplied water, no pump or well. My water pipes make a "chunk, chunk, chunk" sound in the house when the water is running (shower, dish washer, sink, etc.). I saw a question & answer here about pipe rumbling noise *after* the water is turned off being related to air in the pipes, but my problem is while the water is running - it stops when you turn off the water. Is this a similar problem (air)? What can I do to make it stop doing that?

A. The banging sound must be coming from air, the air might be mixing into the water line while it's running. (are you on a well system?) The key is to make sure you have risers at every faucet in the home (pipe that goes up, and stops about 14" up) Another thing is to check the basement for any pipe that is not secured (swaying pipe) And finally if none of this is your problem, you may just need to install a water hammer arrestor.
