In economics, utility is a measure of the relative satisfaction from, or desirability of, consumption of various goods and services. Given this measure, one may speak meaningfully of increasing or decreasing utility, and thereby explain economic behavior in terms of attempts to increase one's utility. The doctrine of utilitarianism saw the maximization of utility as a moral criterion for the organization of society. According to utilitarians, such as Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) and John Stuart Mill (1806-1876), society should aim to maximize the total utility of individuals, aiming for "the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people". Another theory forwarded by John Rawls (1921-2002) would have society maximize the utility of the individual initially receiving the minimum amount of utility. Utility is usually applied by economists in such constructs as the indifference curve, which plot the combination of commodities that an individual or a society would accept to maintain a given level of satisfaction. Individual utility and social utility can be construed as the dependent variable of a utility function (such as an indifference curve map) and a social welfare function respectively. When coupled with production or commodity constraints, under some assumptions, these functions can represent Pareto efficiency, such as illustrated by Edgeworth boxes in contract curves. Such efficiency is a central concept in welfare economics. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Anns utility function is U = q1q2/(q1 + q2). Solve for her optimal values of q1 and q2 as function of p1,p2, and Y. Can anyone show me how to go about solving this problem? I have an exam tomorrow and a problem similar to this might be on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Asked by Renee A - Thu Jan 28 23:35:59 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You have to find the indifference curve from the utility function. Assumed that U is constant, q1=F(q2) -U. Find the slope of the indifference curve dq1/dq2. Find the buget line, pq1+pq2=Y, Find the slope of the budget line, dq1/dq2. At the maximum point the slope of the indifference curve will be equal to the slope of the budget line. By gegeben, Y, U, p1, p2, you will be able to solve for q1 and q2. Answered by Anjaree - Fri Jan 29 20:38:27 2010 Your utility function is given by U=M1/2 ...? Q. Q. can someone help me with differentiation? Utility (at optimum) is always = 0 if for eg, the utility function = 2x y du/dy = 2x and du/dx = (3)(2)x y = 6x y and dx/dy = 3y/x am i correct with my example? sorry, i forgot to mention, du/dx = MUx , and du/dy = MUy, and so MUx/MUy is what i was really trying to say, not dx/dy , yup.. and if the power is too small, im writing it again. the utility function = 2x^3y du/dy = 2x^3 and du/dx = (3)(2)x^2y = 6x^2y and dx/dy = 3y/x and its' not "utility = 0", but "marginal utility" = 0 ... Asked by Just Me - Sat Aug 11 11:29:30 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. No utility at the optimum should never be zero since it should be an element of the positive real numbers. I think what you are saying is that the derivative of utility is 0 at the optimum. In your example, however, the optimum could only be at zero because of your functional form. The only place du/dy could be zero is at zero. Your functional form is convex, the only way to optimize to a maximum given your utility function would be to have concave resources. This would be a little strange. It would imply that you could, for example, purchase 1000 units or 10,000 units but not necessarily any number in between. Further, you did not provide a stated constraint, such as a budget constraint. Against what would you optimize?
