Given this measure, one may speak meaningfully of increasing or decreasing utility, and thereby explain economic behavior in terms of attempts to increase one's utility. The doctrine of utilitarianism saw the maximization of utility as a moral criterion for the organization of society. According to utilitarians, such as Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) and John Stuart Mill (1806-1876), society should aim to maximize the total utility of individuals, aiming for "the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people". Another theory forwarded by John Rawls (1921-2002) would have society maximize the utility of the individual initially receiving the minimum amount of utility. Utility is usually applied by economists in such constructs as the indifference curve, which plot the combination of commodities that an individual or a society would accept to maintain a given level of satisfaction. Individual utility and social utility can be construed as the dependent variable of a utility function (such as an indifference curve map) and a social welfare function respectively. When coupled with production or commodity constraints, under some assumptions, these functions can represent Pareto efficiency, such as illustrated by Edgeworth boxes in contract curves. Such efficiency is a central concept in welfare economics. From Wikipedia under the

Utility Companies make money from selling energy, but it seems they are always trying to reduce people's energy consumption. How does a Utility company benefit from selling LESS energy? All I can think of is that it wants to reduce capacity, but I dont know why. Help me out. Asked by Preston S - Thu Sep 6 16:39:43 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Actually, they don't want to reduce total energy consumed. They want to avoid peak power demand spikes, which overload their systems and cause breakers to pop or equipment to burn out. So, they tell people to do their laundry at night, since during the hot day, air conditioners are using up a lot of the juice. If they can even out the demand, it helps them, so they don't have to invest in more capacity to handle extreme peak power. I purchased a PUR faucet mounted filter but it didn't come with an adapter to fit my utility sink. The faucet on the utility sink has threads that are like a garden hose male side. I need an adapter that goes from that to a normal faucet type thread. I looked on the Home depot web site and couldn't find anything. Please provide a link if you are certain they sell it. Thanks.
