A. I wish more parents were like you Ted. I can see where you're coming from with this approach. You are guiding the child into building team spirit and giving him the confidence to go out and meet other children - most commendable. Perhaps last year you could have got him a boomerang instead of the frisbee but no doubt the idea behind getting him the frisbee was clearly to see the child gets lots of exercise collecting it each time he throws it - much better than sitting behind a computer all day. One comment, if i may, and that is that my understanding of the Connect 4 game is somewhat different to the one I saw at your house on my last visit. Aren't there supposed to be coloured tokens that you drop in the slot? or was that a special… [cont.]

What are some easy, inexpenisve and exciting games/toys that I can make/play with my dog?
Q. She seems to be a little bored at the moment. She is a labrador/golden retriever so she loves water, should I buy a kiddie pool for my back yard so she can swim in it or will she poke her claws through the plastic. She sleeps in one of those beds with a metal frame with a potato bag stitched onto the frame and she always tries to dig a hole through it and we have to replace it all the time, would she do this to the kiddie pool?

A. Dogs are like children in that they don't have fully formed concepts of things. For example, take a dog biscuit and cover it with a towel. The dog will think it disappeared (just like babies playing peek a boo). I play the shell game with my dog. Get three cups (not clear ones) put a cookie under one and mix them up. See if your dog can find the cookie (most of the time they sniff it out). Also, if your dog is pretty obedient, you can teach them about "junk mail." I give my dog my junk mail (or newspaper inserts or old magazines) and she tears it to pieces- she is not a destructive dog at all but I think sometimes dogs need to be allowed to be animals and tear something up. I taught my dog to do this by ripping it a little in… [cont.]

toys games and books that promote psychosocial physical and cognitive development?
Q. what are the benefits of toys games and books relative to the psychosocial physical and cognitive development of early childhood children?
Asked by Rudy W - Sat May 19 23:55:44 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Basic blocks, balls, and cardboard boxes; these can become anything from a car to a castle. Any old Tupper-ware cups, and tumblers, place them a in sandbox, and let their imagination go. Play-doh, or shaving cream, add a table to spray this on, and let the little fingers do the talking. Get a newspaper roll of paper, markers, and crayons; young Picasso's will emerge. Go to a thrift store, and buy items to play dress up; hats, dresses, shirts, and such. Believe me, it does not take a PhD, or a toy store.

Good toys/games for kids with a speech delay?
Q. I have a friend who has a son (about 20 mo. old) with a speech delay (speech of an 11 mo. old). Me, and some other ladies are going in to buy this kid some toys. He has a few (maybe 5 total), and they are good toys LeapFrog things, where you turn the wheel and it sings the ABC's, and baby Tad etc. But all of these toys talk to him, an do not require a response from her son. She's on a tight budget (she didn't buy ANY of the toys she already has) and refuses to buy him any more toys. What we are looking for is some ideas from personal experience or work experience, of some toys that will be useful to him to play with, but will also require her to do a little more, which will encourage him to become more chatty. These do not have to be high… [cont.]

A. Most toys out there use one way communication. That is, they "speak" to the child but do not require the child to speak back. Even if the toy does ask for a response, there is no guarantee the child is going to speak back to it, especially if he has a speech delay. I know, my son is 4 and has a severe speech delay. I think what needs to happen is to not focus on the toy so much but get across to the mother the importance of her playing along with her child. The child doesn't need fancy LeapFrog toys, although they are great. A simple, inexpensive set of animal toys gives mom a great opportunity to role play with her child and make animal noises and at least verbalize. Maybe a food playset will work too. They can name all the… [cont.]

How are toys/video games/electronics selling?
Q. Anyone know how they are doing? From action figures, to Wii games, and cellphones? Do people still invest in them?
Asked by Somegirlie - Wed Apr 1 23:52:32 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There is definately a trend away from the traditional toys going into consumer electronics. Nintendo DS and MP3 players are what kids are looking for. There are always your "no brainers" like hot wheels and barbie (mattel). Bakugan is a hot toy (made by Bandai, I think) but generally, those types of toys are here today, gone tomorrow...remember pogs???. If you are looking to invest, Activision, Electronic Arts and Apple would be some good companies to look at first. As far as cellphones, the money is made with the service providers, not the phones themselves...phones continue to sell well with the new addional features the phones now carry.

A. My 14 year old would say the best gift is the $50 in cash. But he's a guy. How about a gift certificate for your favourite store? In our family, we like to make gifts for each other. Your sister could bake some of your favourite cookies, or maybe fudge for Christmas, and put the $50 in a savings account for you. $50 is a LOT of money! Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy and appreciate.
