From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A toy is an object used in play. Toys are usually associated with children and pets, but it is not unusual for adult humans and some non-domesticated animals to play with toys. Many items are manufactured to serve as toys, but goods, or (game-centric) services produced for other purposes can also be used as toys. A child may pick up a household item and 'fly' it around pretending that it is an airplane, or an animal might play with a pinecone by batting at it, biting it, chasing it, or by throwing it up in the air. Some toys are produced primarily as collector's items and are not intended to be played with. The origin of toys is prehistoric; dolls representing infants, animals, and soldiers, as well as representations of tools used by adults are readily found at archaeological sites. The origin of the word "toy" is unknown, but it is believed that it was first used in the 14th century. Toys, and play in general, are important when it comes to growing up and learning about the world around us. The young use toys and play to discover their identity, help their bodies grow strong, learn cause and effect, explore relationships, and practice skills they will need as adults. Adults use toys and play to form and strengthen social bonds, teach, remember and reinforce lessons from their youth, discover their identity, exercise their minds and bodies, explore relationships, practice skills, and decorate their living spaces. Toys are more than simple amusement, they and the ways that they are used profoundly influence many aspects of life. I just don't know whats the best for toys. I get confused everytime we go to the toy department. The problem we have is that he'll be 1 year old only a month later so its hard to get him 12 month toys for his first christmas and then older toys only a month later. At this point he usually likes the packaging more than whats in it. Asked by Karen G - Wed Sep 6 18:54:43 2006 - - 10 Answers - 3 Comments A. For my son's first Christmas, we gave him diapers. =) Don't worry so much about the ages listed on boxes. My son plays with just about anything that we help him find interesting. Even if the toy says "18 months" there will be plenty that he will find interesting. Really you only need to watch out for small parts he can swallow or moving parts that can pinch. Other than that, find something that you think fits his personality- animals, trucks, etc- and let him figure it out in his own time. Also, books are always good. Even if they seem old, they always grow into them. Kids love pictures, plus you can feel like you're helping them learn. OH- and if they make noise, make sure they have an OFF button. Rule number 1!!! Right now,… [cont.] Answered by Pepper - Wed Sep 6 19:17:43 2006 What are good toys for a hyper indoor cat? Q. My cat loves to play! She shreds up and tries to eat any toys with feathers, so I can't use those anymore. I let her play with little jingly balls during the day, and she loves them so much, but they're too noisy for night time. And she really loves to play at night. She doesn't seem to care too much for catnip filled toys. Any suggestions for a quieter toy that she might like to play with at night? Q. We were given a lot of larger toys for my daughter. We put them in the attic and at the time didn't realize we had bats up there. Well now the toys are covered with bat feces. We were going to just throw the toys out but they are so nice and because of the economy we don't have the money to replace them. How could we disinfect the toys so that they are truly safe for our 14 month old. I was thinking bleach and a hot water spray. And then let them air dry out side. Any thoughts. Asked by joshuandayna - Thu Jun 12 22:45:55 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. I'd make sure you have a good ratio of bleach to water, let them air dry in the sunshine. Bat guano can be toxic and can also harbor disease. Diseases found in guano are respiratory in nature and are an airborne pathogen. PLEASE wear a HEPA mask when you get them down, and if possible wet the area down before you pull them down. It's when there is dry dust kicked up that it's the most serious.
