A watch is a timepiece that is made to be worn on a person. The term now usually refers to a wristwatch, which is worn on the wrist with a strap or bracelet. In addition to the time, modern watches often display the day, date, month and year, and electronic watches may have many other functions.

Most inexpensive and medium-priced watches used mainly for timekeeping are electronic watches with quartz movements. Expensive, collectible watches valued more for their workmanship and aesthetic appeal than for simple timekeeping, often have purely mechanical movements and are powered by springs, even though mechanical movements are less accurate than more affordable quartz movements.

Before the inexpensive miniaturization that became possible in the 20th century, most watches were pocket watches, which often had covers and were carried in a pocket and attached to a watch chain or watch fob. Watches evolved in the 1600s from spring powered clocks, which appeared in the 1400s.

What causes my watches and jewelry to corrode?
Q. Any watches that I wear start to corrode. I got a new Timex for Christmas and the side that faces my hand is already rotting(little holes, rough spots from pitted metal). My dad has a Seiko and his is okay. Whenever I wear new rings(anything except gold or platinum) they start to corrode and pit. Sometimes they even turn black on the inside and anywhere they touch my skin. Same thing for my dad. Occasionally they'll even turn my fingers green(my husband and I bought matching engraved rings at Disney; mine turned black and my finger green and his was fine). All my earrings have to be for sensitive ears or they get infected and the holes get black around the edges. Anyone know why this happens or what causes it? Anything I can do… [cont.]

A. sometimes, your own perspiration causes metals to corrode. This has to do with the composition on your sweat. It's the same reason that some jewelry that isn't gold turns green after a while.

What time will it be when the watches next agree?
Q. Grandma's watch gains 30 minutes every hour, while Grandpa's watch loses 30 minutes every hour. If at midnight both set their watches to the correct time, what time will it be when the watches next agree?

How do Eco Drive Watches (Light Powered) work?
Q. I am trying to research photoelectric sensors like the ones they use in watches. I cannot find any information on them. I am wondering how much energy they can produce in a period of time, how much they cost, and the companies that make them. Any other information about these sensors would be great! Thank you!

A. Eco-Drive is a hidden solar power system for watches, created by Citizen. Watches with the Eco-Drive system look just like regular watches there is no solar "panel" to be seen. Sunlight is absorbed through the crystal and the dial of the watch. A solar cell below the dial converts the lights into electrical energy. An Eco-Drive "Energy Cell" stores enough energy to power the watch for five years. Citizen doesn't say exactly what the energy cell is made out of, but they do say the cell contains less caustic materials than a regular battery. They also say it will function for the lifetime of the watch, and it doesn't need replacement
