I am used to boating in the Great lakes, but have recently moved to FLA and am thinking of buying a boat again
Q. Is there anything special about salt water boating i need to know that is different than fresh water?
Asked by kidpuffy21 - Tue May 6 19:53:33 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The main things to remember are to always rinse out your engine (and wash off your entire boat) when you get it back on the trailer, look for signs of corrosion on electrical contacts (boat and trailer), and be extra careful if you have a steel trailer - my dad had a 23' Slickcraft when he moved down here to Florida back in 1987 (from Northwest Indiana - where we also went boating on the Great Lakes), and the salt water ate that trailer alive in no time flat! It was so bad, it ate the steel brake lines on the trailer completely away. We wound up having to take the boat off the trailer, stripping the trailer down to the bare frame and sand blasting the whole thing and refinishing it from bare metal. In retrospect, we probably should have… [cont.]

Is it safe to go boating while pregnant?
Q. We are not planning on tubing, skiing, anything crazy like that (i obviously know that is off limits). But I'm 29 weeks, live near a lake, own a boat, and am dying to get out on the water. I am not nervous about getting nauseous, or anything like that. I just wanna make sure that the motion of the waves rocking the boat are safe for the baby. We just wanna go out, relax and maybe take a swim, thats it. Please no smarta$$ answers.

A. I've been on a boat plenty of times while pregnant and it was fine. My doctor was more worried about me getting sick from the motion, but I did just fine. The motion is actually quite calming to the baby. If it is relaxing for you, then it is a good thing. The less stress for you is great for the baby.

Do we have to be seated in seats while boating or can we sit on the floor?
Q. I am looking at buying a used boat. It has two seats in it. but is big enough for more. I have two adults and two children that will go out in it. One seat is at the steering wheel, the other is attached behind it, like a back-to-back seat. there was another seat, but it is missing. I just dont know if they are necessary or not. Also does anyone know if boats need to be insured, like a car? We live in Ohio. And will probably be boating on lake erie.

A. You can buy replacement seats at any good boat store, like BoatUS.com or WestMarine.com etc. etc. Check out Craigslist.com for boat parts and you can buy seats there too. You don't need to have seats in a boat. You can sit on the floor. Not very comfortable, but safe. You should buy liability insurance for the boat, it's cheap. If you don't buy the insurance, you will be responsible for any damage you do with the boat. You sound like a new boater, so I recommend you take a boating safety course from your nearest Auxillary Coast Guard Unit. They can teach you safety on the water. Boating is fun but can be dangerous to the novice. Get some help. Good luck.
