Price in economics and business is the result of an exchange and from that trade we assign a numerical monetary value to a good, service or asset. If Alice trades Bob 4 apples for an orange, the price of an orange is 4 apples. Inversely, the price of an apple is 1/4 oranges.

Price is only part of the information we get from observing an exchange. The other part is the volume of the goods traded per unit time, called the rate of purchase or sale. From this additional information we understand the extent of the market and the elasticity of the demand and supply.

The concept of price is central to microeconomics where it is one of the most important variables in resource allocation theory (also called price theory). Price is also central to marketing where it is one of the four variables in the marketing mix that business people use to develop a marketing plan.

In general terms price is the result of an exchange or transaction that takes place between two parties and refers to what must be given up by one party (i.e., buyer) in order to obtain something offered by another party (i.e., seller).

Yet this view of price provides a somewhat limited explanation of what price means to participants in the transaction. In fact, price means different things to different participants in an exchange:

Example - Price is commonly confused with the notion of cost as in “I paid a high cost for buying my new plasma television”. Technically, though, these are different concepts. Price is what a buyer pays to acquire products from a seller. Cost concerns the seller’s investment (e.g., manufacturing expense) in the product being exchanged with a buyer. For marketing organizations seeking to make a profit the hope is that price will exceed cost so the organization can see financial gain from the transaction. Finally, while product pricing is a main topic for discussion when a company is examining its overall profitability, pricing decisions are not limited to for-profit companies. Not-for-profit organizations, such as charities, educational institutions and industry trade groups, also set prices, though it is often not as apparent. For instance, charities seeking to raise money may set different “target” levels for donations that reward donors with increases in status (e.g., name in newsletter), gifts or other benefits. While a charitable organization may not call it a price in their promotional material, in reality these donations are equivalent to price setting since donors are required to give a contribution in order to obtain something of value

A. First off why would you even bid a lawn without trimming around the hard scape and around the trees and so on or even edging that's part of a bid includes you have so much you should consider when bidding a lawn but ill make it fast for you the size for one if its on a big hill to name a few and don't you think you are a little late in the season to be starting a mow crew because most crews have there set clients at the latest by the first week in April and that what the client likes so they can count on that and not have to worry if it will get done or not not to be mean or anything you have so much you need to learn about running a lawn care business

What price would you pay for home made cookies for charity?
Q. I made 1200 chocolate chip cookies on the weekend as a fundraiser for a girl in my community who is quite ill and needs special treatment. What's a fair price? They're made with LOTS of chocolate, are fairly big, and at the risk of sounding arrogant, have become quite popular as they are very good. My donation is my time and ingredients, but I felt I could make a more substantial by turning that $50.00 into much more. What would you pay? Fifty cents each, 3 for a dollar? More, less? They are not being sold all at once, but rather ,1 container at a time. Most are frozen right now!

A. That's awesome of you to do something so thoughtful, I'm sure the girl and her family will truly appreciate the support. Don't worry about arrogance. Have you seen the prices at Mrs. Fields in the mall? For a good cause such as this, I wouldn't bat an eye paying between a dollar and three dollars each for a large cookie. Maybe $1.50 each is a happy medium. And you could have a sign that boasts the generous ingredients, and indicates that the price is the minimum donation each, but all additional proceeds benefit the very worthy cause too. All the best to you on this, and especially to the girl and her family

What is a fair price for carpet including installation for a living room and a hall totaling 430 sq ft?
Q. I know that the price largely depends on what type of carpeting I buy. I am looking for a ball park or average estimate. This is for a rental property and I only need it to last for about three years. I am the tenant and really don't want to pay more than I have to since I am not going to be taking it with me when I move out. I don't need anything too fancy but I would still like something comfortable that looks decent. As for the installation, there is no carpet to remove and I can move most if not all of the furniture myself if that reduces the price. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful in planning our budget for this project. Thanks

A. I called Empire carpet, and I think their price was around $2000 for 60 sq yards. That was too expensive for me, so I found a guy who will install it for 300, and I'm ordering some from a mill in Georgia for around 900 with shipping.
