Music is an art form whose medium is sound. Common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike), "(art) of the Muses".

The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music ranges from strictly organized compositions (and their recreation in performance), through improvisational music to aleatoric forms. Music can be divided into genres and subgenres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to individual interpretation, and occasionally controversial. Within "the arts", music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art, and auditory art.

To many people in many cultures music is an important part of their way of life. Greek philosophers and ancient Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound." According to musicologist Jean-Jacques Nattiez, "the border between music and noise is always culturally defined—which implies that, even within a single society, this border does not always pass through the same place; in short, there is rarely a consensus.... By all accounts there is no single and intercultural universal concept defining what music might be, except that it is 'sound through time'."

What music do you suggest listening to when doing homework?
Q. What bands/songs do you enjoy listening to when doing homework? I can't concentrate without music, but can't concentrate with the majority of the music I own, so what music works with you?

A. I have observed myself that my concentration level is higher when music is played in the background while I am doing any work. The best music is soft instrumental. Rock is too loud to distract you. If there are songs sung by someone are equally distracting as the lyrics and the modulation and pitch of voice distract. The most important thing to remember is that the music should be something very soft, soothing. Some which work best for me are a) Yanni - tracks - Nostalgia, Until last moment, One man, Nightingale b) Kitaro c) Titanic tracks - they are instrumental d) And if you like Indian music, then go for Sitar by Ravi Shankar e) Santoor by Shiv kumar sharma So, which one would you go for? Happy home-working!! For more… [cont.]

A. You have to set your ipod to "manually manage my music" then you can just plug it in to the computer and drag the songs you want across onto your ipod without deleting anything.

Q. Hi! I have a 14-year old student who is a "C" student. She knows it and is determined to improve on it. She has asked me (a music teacher) what kind of music will help her in her studies. I have sort of heard about listening to music by Bach can help infants in their learning. But, what about teenagers? Is this scientifically proven? Are there good information on the internet? Please help and advise. Thank you.

A. First, sad to say but mozart doesn't make you smarter. Those studies that proved that were all proven false because the people who played mozart for their babies were oddly enough, the same ones who read to their babies, and talked to them, and did everything else. There is no music that will make you smarter by inactively listening to it, just as there is no pill that will make you stronger by simply putting it in your mouth. All good things cost, and smartness costs work. Some music can easy the pain of study, but it can't make the study easier.
