Jurisdiction (from the Latin ius, iuris meaning "law" and dicere meaning "to speak") is the practical authority granted to a formally constituted legal body or to a political leader to deal with and make pronouncements on legal matters and, by implication, to administer justice within a defined area of responsibility.

Alternatively, jurisdiction is the authority given to a legal body or to a political leader to adjudicate and enforce legal matters. The term is also used to denote the geographical area or subject-matter to which such authority applies.

Jurisdiction draws its substance from public international law, conflict of laws, constitutional law and the powers of the executive and legislative branches of government to allocate resources to best serve the needs of its native society.

Who thinks that the Orthodox Churches should be more united on outside jurisdictions?
Q. Like, when orthodox churches do missions in other countries like the Philippines, each patriarch does its own mission. Don't you think it would be more effective if they all agreed to have joint missions instead of each trying to establish their own? That way most parts of a low-orthodox country can get churches instead of each patriarch building churches in the same major city. and who feels that an American Patriarchy should be established to fix the overlapping church jurisdictions in America?

A. Maybe not one mission of one autocephalous Church, but it is obvious that they should be better coordinated. On recent talks in Geneva there was set that canonical EO Bishops in diaspora will gather to coordinate their actions.

Can a person be subject to probation in two different jurisdictions at the same time?
Q. I have a friend who was convicted in two jurisdictions in NY City for two different offenses; Bronx County & NY County (Manhattan). He was placed on probation separately in each venue. He has been reporting to one probation officer NY County) who he assumed controlled both jurisdictions. Yet, he received a notice to appear in Bronx Criminal Court for failing to report to probation in the Bronx. Consequently, he was violated and imprisoned. Can he be subject to probation in both jurisdictions simultaneously??

A. Probation is run by the state, so the cases should have been combined. Apparently they both happened close enough together that neither county caught the other. Your friend did not help his situation any by not advising his probation officer of the other incident.

Q. Most jurisdictions allow paralegals/legal assistants to be listed on firm letterhead or to have their own business cards true or false?

A. If it's a firm of licensed lawyers, then false. Well, I know it's false in Ontario, and it makes a whole lot of sense that it wouldn't be true elsewhere. It wouldn't make much sense for a firm name to be "Lennon and McCartney, Attorneys-at-law" if only Lennon was an attorney-at-law, and McCartney was just a paralegal. On the other hand, if you were running a firm of *just* paralegals, then I don't think there's any problem with a firm name that says "Vera, Chuck, and Dave, Paralegal Services". ETA: Sorry, missed the business card part. I don't see any problem with a paralegal who works for a law firm having his own business card. I know some who do. (Though the ones I know actually work for a legal aid clinic under the supervision… [cont.]
