Do the baking instructions change if I substitute shortening with oil?
Q. I'm baking a cake from scratch (wish me luck) and I'm going to substitute oil for shortening. Can I actually do that? I only found a few forums saying so. The instructions say to cream sugar and shortening. What do I do if I use oil again? I'm doubting I can cream the 2 so should I just mix them? And help and links welcome! Oh wow, thanks! Is there anything I could use instead? I thought oil sounded way too different from shortening.

A. You can cream sugar and margarine or sugar and butter together like you would sugar and shortening. That step helps to make your cake light and fluffy, so substituting with oil won't work. Just use margarine if you have some...the stick kind, not the tub.

How does the brain process instructions?
Q. Computers, for instance, can only process ONE instruction at a time. But how does the brain process instructions? For example, when you're driving down the road, listening to music, how are you able to do BOTH simultaneously without wrecking your car or not comprehending the music? Can the brain process more than one instruction at a time? I'm just curious.

A. That's why you have different parts of the brain the take care of different functions. Some people with brain damage cannot do two things at once, like in your example. The left half of the brain processes logic, numbers, letters, words, speaking, and distance. The right side of the brain processes shape, images, video, music, emotion, and color. We tend to use our left brain more when driving somewhere we don't recognize. Then familiar routes like the drive to work end up being controlled by our right brain. The left stays mildly active a to look for different/dangerous situations. This is why it's easy to "zone out" while driving to work and not remembering what happened over 10 or 15 miles. Of course there is crossover and… [cont.]

A. How to cut up a chicken 1. Place chicken on its back on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut skin between thighs and body. 2. Grasp one leg in each hand, lift chicken and bend back legs until bones break at hip joints. 3. Turn bird on side to remove leg and thigh from body, cut from tail toward shoulder, cutting between points close to bones in back of bird. Repeat other side. 4. To separated thigh and drumsticks, locate knee joint by bending thigh and leg together. Cut through joints of each leg. 5. To remove wings, place chicken on back and cut inside of wing over joint. Cut from to down through joint. 6. To separate breast and back, place bird on neck end or back and cut through joints along each side or rib cage. Cut away… [cont.]
