Although the term substance can refer to any physical matter, substance abuse has come to refer to the overindulgence in and dependence of a drug or other chemical leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual's physical and mental health, or the welfare of others. Source: A Public Health Approach to Drug Control in Canada, Health Officers Council of British Columbia, 2005The disorder is characterized by a pattern of continued pathological use of a medication, non-medically indicated drug or toxin, that results in repeated adverse social consequences related to drug use, such as failure to meet work, family, or school obligations, interpersonal conflicts, or legal problems. There are on-going debates as to the exact distinctions between substance abuse and substance dependence, but current practice standard distinguishes between the two by defining substance dependence in terms of physiological and behavioral symptoms of substance use, and substance abuse in terms of the social consequences of substance use. Substance abuse may lead to addiction or substance dependence. Medically, physiologic dependence requires the development of tolerance leading to withdrawal symptoms. Both abuse and dependence are distinct from addiction which involves a compulsion to continue using the substance despite the negative consequences, and may or may not involve chemical dependency. Dependence almost always implies abuse, but abuse frequently occurs without dependence, particularly when an individual first begins to abuse a substance. Dependence involves physiological processes while substance abuse reflects a complex interaction between the individual, the abused substance and society. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Is getting a degree in psychology good if I want to go into substance abuse counseling? Q. I want to be an addictions counselor when I get older, however, would it be okay to get a degree in psychology and in graduate school get my masters in substance abuse counseling? Asked by Lauren - Mon Dec 15 15:51:29 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, that would work. The only thing you couldn't do is prescribe medicine, but you will be able to do therapy and psychoanalysis. You may want to pursue a general psych masters instead, because you can do counseling with that, and leave more career doors open. Also, you might need a PhD for some of the higher end jobs in the field. Q. What factors make illegal substance abuse still relevant in this Presidential campaign? Asked by mark_tidman - Wed Sep 24 13:30:51 2008 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. I notice that most haven't answered the question, instead opting to make a crack (he he) about Obama, Bush, etc. The topic of illegal substance abuse is one that doesn't get much play out of either candidate. However, there are underlying policy issues. Some say that no substances should be illegal (this is a true libertarian argument). Others say that some (like pot) should be legalized or at least decriminalized. There are debates over what to spend on the "war on drugs" and the methods. Should Federal dollars be used for treatment? All of these are topics that, while not at the top of either candidate's agenda, do have a place within their platforms.
