Nounaddictions
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The term "addiction" is used in many contexts to describe an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence, such as: drug addiction (e.g. alcoholism, nicotine addiction), problem gambling, crime, money, work addiction, compulsive overeating, computer addiction, video game addiction, pornography addiction, television addiction, etc. In medical terminology, an addiction is a chronic neurobiologic disorder that has genetic, psychosocial, and environmental dimensions and is characterized by one of the following: the continued use of a substance despite its detrimental effects, impaired control over the use of a drug (compulsive behavior), and preoccupation with a drug's use for non-therapeutic purposes (i.e. craving the drug). Addiction is often accompanied by the presence of deviant behaviors (for instance stealing money and forging prescriptions) that are used to obtain a drug. Tolerance to a drug and physical dependence are not defining characteristics of addiction, although they typically accompany addiction to certain drugs. Tolerance is a pharmacologic phenomenon where the dose of a medication needs to be continually increased in order to maintain its desired effects. For instance, individuals with severe chronic pain taking opiate medications (like morphine) will need to continually increase the dose in order to maintain the drug's analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. Physical dependence is also a pharmacologic property and means that if a certain drug is abruptly discontinued, an individual will experience certain characteristic withdrawal signs and symptoms. Many drugs used for therapeutic purposes produce withdrawal symptoms when abruptly stopped, for instance oral steroids, certain antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and opiates. However, common usage of the term addiction has spread to include psychological dependence. In this context, the term is used in drug addiction and substance abuse problems, but also refers to behaviors that are not generally recognized by the medical community as problems of addiction, such as compulsive overeating. The term addiction is also sometimes applied to compulsions that are not substance-related, such as problem gambling and computer addiction. In these kinds of common usages, the term addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences, as deemed by the user themself to their individual health, mental state, or social life. GNU Free Documentation License What are ways for people to overcome eating addictions.? Q. How do people over come eating addictions. Why doesn't the ogoverment fund more programs or provide more medical assistance to people trying to overcome eating addictions? Do you ever notice how expensive and how risky some of the treatments there are out there for that. I understand some people suffer trauma and eat as a result to comfort. But, what if people just really enjoy it? Thoughts? btw i am not obese but I do like to eat and sometimes I like to eat a little too much and just wondered what ideas there are to overcome my eating habits. Your Doctor can hook u up with a good diet ,there's Dietitians that give good advice through Hospital. You can figure out what's best for you and not someone else.Maybe you require more green veggies, then your neighbor, Mother,or sister. The hard part is stay power on any new menu for your food intake.Good Luck.Think small portions this helps, like I can always go back for a small amount more.Use small dishes, and silverware.Instead of a full portion do a half.A half sandwich, soup, and salad.Cut out breads completely for awhile,no sweets, eat fruits instead of sweets.Apples, carrots, and raisins are very good for you. The way I see it, the medical world acts much like the media in the fact that they seek nearly as much attention using whatever they can come up with for a story. They are always labeling common activities, calling them "addictions". You here it all the time. Internet addiction. Video game addiction. They have become so corrupt that they have ruined so many lives and they still get away with murder because they are so called Doctors, They are not Doctors, they are Sales people with a degree, Some are legit but most of them are to lazy to work and choose psychology for a field. There a numerous web sites exposing there tactics and the FDA and Government allows their corruption to flourish, They don't think you should swat your child's but to get their attention, you should give them a pill and take them to a counselor, Money Money Money, and we pay for this abuse. Answered by mr.obvious - Sat Aug 25 13:00:05 2007 Does Auriculotherapy work for all addictions or JUST smoking?
Q. Hey guys. just wanted to know if any of you have any previous history or experience with Auriculotherapy . The zero smoke website has the new magnets that go on your ear for 3-4 hours a day. They claim that your smoking addiction will be gone, but i'm wondering if its the same for other addictions, or if it's simply for smoking. I don't mean like alcohol addiction, or weed addiction. I mean like pain pills, or sleeping pills...etc. It's a magnet that goes on the ear, and I'm wondering if it is supposed to work for other things too. Any ideas? Also, to the "It's all in your head" posters. please stop right there. I just wanted to know HOW many addictions this can help with. thanks. I don't know about the magnets, specifically but auriculotherapy generally means ear acupuncture, which I know something about. I would imagine that the magnets are a substitute for the needles. Ear acupuncture is used for anti smoking therapy and it is commonly used to help people that are getting off of heroin. The idea is that it helps relax you and it does. It is wonderful for heroin addicts, but not used alone. When you say pain pills, if you mean opiates, then it is the same theory. Auriculotherapy will help a lot along with medical treatment. Don't try to go all natural with this if you are addicted. The acupuncture would be especially helpful along with a clonodine (medication to lower your blood pressure) treatment for… [cont.] Answered by pookabun1 - Sun Jul 8 00:30:12 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "addictions" Put down the controller: Expert explains game addiction
