Fuel releases its energy either through a chemical reaction means, such as combustion, or nuclear means, such as nuclear fission or nuclear fusion. An important property of a useful fuel is that its energy can be stored to be released only when needed, and that the release is controlled in such a way that the energy can be harnessed to produce work. Examples: Methane, Petrol and Oil. All carbon-based life forms—from microorganisms to animals and humans—depend on and use fuels as their source of energy. Their cells engage in an enzyme-mediated chemical process called metabolism that converts energy from food or light into a form that can be used to sustain life. Additionally, humans employ a variety of techniques to convert one form of energy into another, producing usable energy for purposes that go far beyond the energy needs of a human body. Fossil fuels, such as gasoline, result in carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming. The less gasoline we use, the less global warming. Alternative fuel vehicles are currently be offerred that reduces or eliminates the need for gas. These include hybrids (like the Toyota Prius) and electric cars. Advantages: Liquid fuels are relatively easy to handle, transport and store. Disadvantages: Liquid fuels are usually an expensive alternative for electricity generation and tend to cause more problems (erosion etc.) when used in gas turbines than do gaseous fuels. Liquid fuels can spill and cause serious contamination. Gaseous and solid fuels are better in this respect. The major change that happened in the earth's atmosphere from the times when the climate was MUCH hotter, was the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere into plants that then got buried in geological layers. That is, more and more CO2 got trapped into fossil fuel and stayed out of the atmosphere. This changed the climate dramatically, and we adapted to that changed climate. By burning this fuel, we are again releasing this gas into the atmosphere, and dramatically changing the climate to what it was billions of years ago.
