What would be the dependent variable for this psychology experiment?
Q. In this experiment, there are two groups in a driving simulator - one is texting and the other one is driving normally. We are measuring how many times the participants from both groups swerve across the yellow line. The amount of times they swerve is the dependent variable, but what is the dependent variable? The groups? Texting? Thanks.

A. In independent variable is a variable that YOU change in order to impact the dependent variable. This is actually a difficult example. The dependent variable is the amount of times they swerve the independent variable is the cell phone use. It is the factor that you control and it its the factor that effects the dependent variable ( how many times the car swerves)

What are the dependent variables and independent variables of this project?
Q. I am helping my cousin with his science project and its "what materials keep ice from melting for the longest time?" Im using 3 ice cubes, alluminum foil, plastic wrap, and paper towel. Im going to wrap an ice cube in each and leave them on the kitchen table for 45 minutes. I need to know what are the dependent variables and independent variables. Help please!

A. The dependent variable is the time it takes to completely melt one ice-cube, since the time depends on what the ice is wrapped in. So the independent variable is the material used ... aluminum foil ... The problem is that you can't plot an (x, y) point without two numbers. Time is a number but aluminum foil isn't. You can make a bar graph where each vertical bar is a different material and the height of each bar is the melting time. You can get really complicated by looking us the thermal conductivity of aluminum foil, different plastics, paper, ... Then you would have a number for each material although it probably wouldn't be very accurate because there are many other factors that determine the transfer of heat through the actual… [cont.]
