From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Christmas or Christmas Day is a holiday observed mostly on December 25 to commemorate the birth of Jesus, the central figure of Christianity. The date is not known to be the actual birth date of Jesus, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either the day exactly nine months after some early Christians believed Jesus had been conceived, the date of the winter solstice on the ancient Roman calendar, or one of various ancient winter festivals. Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days. Although nominally a Christian holiday, Christmas is also widely celebrated by many non-Christians, and many of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. In addition, Father Christmas (or Santa Claus) is a popular folklore figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children. Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Do you think Christmas is a pagan holiday shaped to drive consumerism? Q. I have already read the history of Christmas, the legends of it, and the various origins of it. But I want to know what you think. Do you think Christmas is merely a pagan holiday sprinkled with legends of the birth of a boy named Jesus? Is Christmas a phony pagan holiday to drive consumerism? Provide your insight but please you don't have to explain every technical detail of the holiday because I have already done my research on it. This is an opinion gathering question. Christmas being a holiday started by Christians as a way to cover up or to overshadow the Winter Solstice celebrations of long ago, is definitely a pagan holiday sprinkled with legends of a boy named Jesus. Which makes no sense, since the Winter Solstice is a celebration of nature and the new growing season...umm...reality. But actually, where I come from, it's more than a sprinkle, it's a whole bucket full of legend dumped on top of the whole holiday. Ok, that being said, consumerism...I do still celebrate Christmas in the spirit of giving. Plus, it's just fun! But yes, I do think it's a time when people go overboard; especially when it comes to children. So, it really teaches kids about receiving more and more and more. I LOVE Christmas shopping and I love seeing the beautiful Christmas trees that are on display when I am shopping,I still don't know how to tell what theme a tree is by seeing how it is decorated. What kinds of themes do you see while you are shopping for Christmas gifts,do you ever see a Christmas tree that has the same kind of theme as your Christmas tree you have at home? Asked by Santa Claus(e)-The pianist. - Mon Nov 24 17:48:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The tree at my house doesn't really have a theme. I decorate it with ornaments that were made by my sister and I when we were younger, ornaments my great grandmother crocheted and ornaments that my family has collected over the years. Most of the trees that I see in stores don't have themes, with the exception of the tree at Cracker Barrel. They usually decorate their trees with rustic decorations (i.e. black bears, wooden ornaments, etc.). I have never really thought to pay much attention to trees decorated in shops, but I will now. :) Answered by unknown - Tue Nov 25 00:51:09 2008 What has everyone got planned for christmas 09 and what are you getting for christmas?
