Christmas or Christmas Day is an annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated on December 25, but this date is not known to be Jesus' actual birthday, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either the day exactly nine months after some early Christians believed Jesus had been conceived, a historical Roman festival, or the date of the northern hemisphere's winter solstice. Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.

Although a Christian holiday, Christmas is also widely celebrated by many non-Christians, and some of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. In addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in some areas, including North America, Australia and Ireland) is a popular folklore figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children.

Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.

Do you think Christmas is a pagan holiday shaped to drive consumerism?
Q. I have already read the history of Christmas, the legends of it, and the various origins of it. But I want to know what you think. Do you think Christmas is merely a pagan holiday sprinkled with legends of the birth of a boy named Jesus? Is Christmas a phony pagan holiday to drive consumerism? Provide your insight but please you don't have to explain every technical detail of the holiday because I have already done my research on it. This is an opinion gathering question.

A. Christmas being a holiday started by Christians as a way to cover up or to overshadow the Winter Solstice celebrations of long ago, is definitely a pagan holiday sprinkled with legends of a boy named Jesus. Which makes no sense, since the Winter Solstice is a celebration of nature and the new growing season...umm...reality. But actually, where I come from, it's more than a sprinkle, it's a whole bucket full of legend dumped on top of the whole holiday. Ok, that being said, consumerism...I do still celebrate Christmas in the spirit of giving. Plus, it's just fun! But yes, I do think it's a time when people go overboard; especially when it comes to children. So, it really teaches kids about receiving more and more and more. I hear… [cont.]

Where can I plant a live christmas tree?
Q. So we got a live christmas tree this year, hoping that we could plant it somewhere. Now Christmas is long gone, but we still have our little tree and nowhere to plant it. Any ideas? A park? A national park? I'm in Berkeley so I didn't think it would be so hard what with all these green types around, but so far I've got no leads and it's getting to where this poor little fella might wind up in the dumpster. Thanks!
