Buildings come in a wide amount of shapes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide number of factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic reasons. Buildings serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather and as general living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and work. A building as a shelter represents a physical division of the human habitat into the inside (a place of comfort and safety) and the outside (a place that at times may be harsh and harmful). Ever since the first cave paintings, buildings have also become objects or canvasess of artistic expression. In recent years, interest in sustainable planning and building practices has also become part of the design process of many new buildings. DefinitionsTo differentiate buildings in the usage of this article from other buildings and other structures that are not intended for continuous human occupancy, the latter are called nonbuilding structures or simply structures. Structural height in technical usage is the height to the highest architectural detail on building from street-level. Depending on how they are classified, spires and masts may or may not be included in this height. Spires and masts used as antennas are not generally included. The definition of a low-rise vs. a high-rise building is a matter of debate, but generally three stories or less is considered low-rise. HistoryThe first shelter on Earth constructed by a relatively close ancestor to humans is believed to be built 500,000 years ago by an early ancestor of humans, Homo erectus. From Wikipedia under the

How long does it usually take on average to build a 12 story building, from the initial site preparation to completion? I ask because the city I work in there's such a building going up, and they started work on it about a year ago. Is that a long time for such a building, or is it about normal? Asked by some_guy_times_50 - Fri Feb 9 23:47:04 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments A. Depends a great deal on the complexity of the building. A two storey hospital could take much longer than a 20 storey simple structure office block. If it's a very simple structure then it's quite slow progress but if it's a complicated structure with varying design elements, complicated services, high standard of finishes then it's not a long time. If the client has made very specific or unusual requests this can seriosuly slow down construction. Budget can play a part - if budget isn't so much of a problem then you can hire in several tower cranes, lots of plant and workers and get the job moving quickly. Did the 12 months include site preparation as this can take a long time? If so are there any more requirements than building a bathroom on any other floor? Thank you for your answers. Asked by ser002250 - Sun Dec 9 09:37:30 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know about NYC, but I've seen bathrooms in the basement a lot elsewhere. However, there are some unique plumbing problems to go with that, so you'll want someone who knows what they're doing. Answered by Tigger - Sun Dec 9 10:03:04 2007 What would it cost to build a pool when building a house?
Q. My husband and I want to build a house within the next year. Would it be cheaper to put the pool in as we are building the house? How much will it cost in Western NC. How much pool and house could we get a for $150K? Asked by Marie P - Wed May 20 09:32:58 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The cost of a house or a pool depends a great deal on the size and type. You may actually pay more for a pool when you are building a house if the general contractor is responsible for getting the pool built. He will probably add a fee to the cost from the pool contractor. You need to decide on a house floor plan and other details and then get prices from various qualified contractors to know what your house is going to cost. In general, houses in the $150,000 range don't have pools. The owners usually put their money into the cost of the house. Also you really don't want to be paying for a pool over the life of your mortgage. That is a lot of interest. My guess is you can get a 1200 to 1800 square foot house for $150,000.
