Do $100 American Banknotes from the 1950's-80's have a security bar when held up to the light?
Q. I have four, hundred dollar banknotes without any security bars when held up to the light, are they real or fake? The newest bill is from 1981 and the oldest is from 1950.

Why shopes in the Netherlands do not accept some banknotes?
Q. Why shopes in the Netherlands do not accept banknotes of 100, 200, 500 Euros? I never seen before in other EU countries.
Asked by Churro - Sat Feb 21 11:20:45 2009 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Many or even most shops in the Netherlands do not accept the a 200 and a 500 notes and quite a few do not accept the a 100 notes because there are so many fake ones. And they claim it is because they do not have enough change in the cash if someone pays with big money. Which is only true if you need to pay a much smaller amount but often they do not accept the money even when it is near the amount you have to pay. Shops that regularly sell things for big money, like televisions or cars, do accept the bigger bills too, but often only after making a note of your passport number. And after many having checked the note to being a real one and not a fake.

now i am keeping many pieces of a 200 and a 500 banknotes,i am afraid the ECB will phase it out of circulation?
Q. Do u think it will do it?
Asked by Datuk Seri Man - Sat Feb 6 00:26:59 2010 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Hi! You should DEPOSIT all of them by now. The European Central Bank is now redesigning all Euro banknotes. This means that you could be left with a worthless stack of notes within a year or so. Besides, it is not safe to keep banknotes of value inside your house. But no, the ECB will not phase them out. If they will, you'll find it in the Internet way before they phase them out. So don't worry.

If you robbed a whole load of used banknotes, can you really just go out and spend it all?Or is there a trap?
Q. Sounds a bit simple to me,is there a way to get caught by spending used notes?
Asked by nutter - Mon Jul 27 11:05:19 2009 - - 14 Answers - Comments

A. It would depend on where you got them. If you took them from a bank then theres a good chance they had a record of the numbers. If you got them elsewhere then you would have little problem laundering them. The self service tills in supermarkets are very handy for this - simply buy something that costs a couple of pence and give the machine a few pennies and a large note. The machines don't give you the same note back.

How do US banknotes come home?
Q. When an American goes to France, he typically exchanges dollars for francs there. Similarly the French typically buys his dollars here. Thus physical dollar bills would pile up there and French bills would pile up here. How do the dollars come home? I can imagine 2 scenarios 1) dollars find their way to the central bank, are physically bundled and sent home, or possibly dropped off at the embassy in return for a credit. Or 2) French central bank burns them and sends a message to this effect a gaining a credit at the Fed. How does it work?

A. Well, for one thing banks exchange amongst themselves.

Lewes prints its own banknotes to make people shop local. How does that stop world inflation?
Q. Any more of that nonsense and we'll go back to medieval barter, or work for goods in kind, or trade in "company tokens".
Asked by CAM - Tue Sep 9 11:22:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. It doesn't (stop World inflation) because Lewes is not a self contained economy. As you say not far off -barter - goods in kind - company tokens.By the way I harvested some Turnips this morning.Wanna swap ? What you got ? E-mail your offer denominated in groats to waldo_m@baldrick.co.uk

Q. I'm travelling to Scotland next week. After 2 weeks, there I'm planning to make a little car trip from Glasgow to London. But, the thing is that I just found out that..Scotland makes there own banknotes...??? Is that legal??? Are they legal in the rest of UK? And finally, should I have any problem IF I rent a car in Scotland and Take to England?? Thanks for your answers!
Asked by afg987654321 - Fri Aug 21 09:06:28 2009 - - 12 Answers - Comments

A. Contrary to what people are saying, Scottish banknotes are not legal tender anywhere in the UK - even Scotland. They are a promissory note - the bank promises to give you legal tender if you hand one over. There's no obligation to accept one as payment, but it's accepted practice in Scotland.

Why do British banknotes have a copyright notice?
Q. I mean, forgery is illegal anyway, are they going to do you for forgery AND copyright violation?
Asked by mattygroves - Fri Mar 9 03:34:18 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Forgery requires that the person make fake notes that he/she intends to pass as real. Copyright prohibits any use of any part of the banknote. So, if someone wished to copy the entire banknote or just the Queen's portrait from the banknote, and blow it up to poster size, with a mustache, and sell multiple posters; that would not be forgery, (because the poster sized thing would not be passable as a real banknote; but would violate the copyright.

A. No. Bank of England notes are only legal tender in England and Wales. See link from the Royal Mint for confirmation and further info: Likewise, Northern Irish and Scottish banknotes are not legal tender in England and Wales. Northern Ireland and Scotland will however accept Bank of England notes without question.

How to clean old, dirty banknotes and coins without damaging them?
Q. I am an amature banknote collector.I have some old banknotes with ugly staining. Some coins without lustre as well. Please tell me how do I clean them without damaging them.
Asked by rohanadh - Tue Feb 9 10:59:03 2010 - - 6 Answers - Comments

A. Please do not attempt to clean either the notes or the coins. Any experienced collector will be able to see what you have done and then automatically lower the grades on both the notes and coins. In some cases all you will be left with is face value. There are professionals who know how to treat coins and in some cases notes without doing any damage to the items. But this takes practice and someone who understands when to do it and when not to do it. Invariably amateurs screw up the value of the items when they attempt to clean them.
