Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or obligation.

Workplace

Frequent absence from the workplace may be indicative of poor morale or of sick building syndrome. However, many employers have implemented absence policies which make no distinction between absences for genuine illness and absence for inappropriate reasons. One of these policies is the calculation of the Bradford factor, which only takes the total number and frequency of absences into account, not the kind of absence.

As a result, many employees feel obliged to come to work while ill, and transmit communicable diseases to their co-workers. This leads to even greater absenteeism and reduced productivity among other workers who try to work while ill. Work forces often do excuse absenteeism caused by medical reasons if the worker supplies a doctor's note or other form of documentation. Sometimes, people choose not to show up for work and do not call in advance, which businesses may find to be unprofessional and inconsiderate. This is called a no call or no show. According to Nelson & Quick (2008) people who are dissatisfied with their jobs are absent more frequently. They went on to say that the type of dissatisfaction that most often leads employees to miss work is dissatisfaction with the work itself.

How do you ask for a leave of absence after just getting hired?
Q. I just got hired and going to orientation tomorrow. But I have a wedding to go to next Saturday. How do I ask for a leave of absence after working for less than a week? It's a hard one haha =|. I just got hired at United Artist btw.

A. You shouldn't ask for the time off. Sorry, but I imagine you knew about the wedding when you accepted the job, yes? At the point when you were offered the job and as you were accepting the job, you should have been very up-front about any plans on your calendar (including this wedding, or a vacation ticket you purchased 6 months ago) so that the employer would know full-well going into it, that yes, you accept the job, but that no, you would not be available for that particular Saturday. The employer would have then had the opportunity and knowledge about your situation, to change their mind based on your availability (depending on how critical that particular Saturday really is/was, but I hardly doubt an employer would change their… [cont.]

How can kinases be active in the absence of phosphorylation?
Q. Some kinases need to be phosphorylated to become active. In the cases where this phosphorylation occurs on specific serine or threonine residues, substitution of this residues with aspartic or glutamic acid can cause the kinase to be active in the absence of phosphorylation. Explain why this is the case.
Asked by Robin - Tue Jan 29 17:47:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Because the aspartate or glutamate residues provide a negative charge in the region where the phosphate would have gone, thus mimicking the phosphorylation.
