On the internet, a price comparison service (also known as shopping comparison or price engine) allows individuals to see different lists of prices for specific products. Most price comparison services do not sell products themselves, but source prices from retailers from whom users can buy. In the UK, these services made between £120m and £140m in revenue in 2005 , and is growing at an annual rate of 30% to 50%.

History

The internet boom of the late 1990s made price comparison profitable.

Price comparison services were initially implemented as client-side add-ins to the Netscape and Internet explorer browsers, and required that additional software be downloaded and installed. After these initial efforts, comparison shopping migrated to the server so that the service would be accessible to anyone with a browser.

Services are now offered by websites dedicated to price comparison and by major portals such as Yahoo!.

Shopping

In the late 1990s, as more people gained access to the internet, a range of shopping portals were built that listed retailers for specific product genres. Retailers listed paid the website a fixed fee for appearing. These were little more than an online version of the Yellow Pages. As technology has improved, a newer "breed" of shopping Web portals is being created that are changing both the business model and the features and functionality offered. These sites do not "aggregate" data-feeds provided from the retailers, they search and retrieve the data directly from each retailer site. This allows for a much more comprehensive list of retailers and the ability to update the data in real-time.

Generic portals and search engines launched similar services and companies that stood to benefit from increased internet shopping (especially credit card and delivery firms) launched similar sites. Many of these services have since closed.

how to get 1000s of twitter followers to aide my UK online business?
Q. I run a service that is potentially very interesting to people as it is a comparison site that gives the best price for recycling a mobile phone. I want to move the site virally via twitter. But I do not know how to get lots of followers.

A. Phil, One thing I learned is that it's more important to focus on the quality of your followers over the quantity. You can easily get a bunch of followers by following people at random, but if none of them visit your site it really won't mean much. A couple of things you should do, is look for Twitter accounts that discuss mobile phones, find their followers, and start following them. If somebody is following a Twitter account that discusses mobile phones, chances are that they will have an interest in your account. Additionally, Tweet OFTEN. The more you Tweet, the more exposure your account will get. Check out search.twitter.com. Every time you post a tweet, it will show up hear if somebody searches for a phrase that was within… [cont.]

02 Broadband - any customers want to give their opinion?
Q. 02 broadband...is it any good? I just asked a similar question about the Sky combined phone/TV/broadband package and most people seemed impressed with them so we were going to order it BUT we've just found that it's not available in the area we're moving to. We've seen 02advertised as good value on a price comparison site and it would be cheap for us as we're 02 mobile customers already. So we wondered what people who have this service thought of it. We're especially concerned about the broadband technical back up - it is advertised as a UK based centre with free calls to it, is that really so? Are they swift at putting things right? All opinions welcome! Thanks TI T - could you expand a bit??

A. It is great!! ultra quick and the customer service is out of this world! Plus you have a 02 mobile so you will get reduced costs and the benefit of a online control Panel to send texts ect for your phone for free. You will love it. They are defo best ISP in this country.

Choosing the right Broadband?
Q. Ok im currently on AOL Broadband Cable 256k. I havent had any problems and iv been with AOL for 7 years now. I've been looking at broadband comparison sites for the UK for a while now because I don't think AOL's prices are good for value. I pay something like 17.99 for 256k broadband. Im sure that is expensive. I want a high bandwidth broadband, something at least 512k, i prefer 2mb to be honest. Can someone please tell me a good UK internet service provider with good prices and services. Thanks. ps i heard o2 are pretty decent, any1 advise that?

A. Well I'm using BT and it seems quite reasonable. It's up to 8Mb/s, unlimited broadband, we get around 3.4Mb/s . I believe we pay something like 26 a month for that package, you can get other ones. But if you wanted a cheaper provider, there should be many available. Tiscali for example probably don't do a bad job from what some of my friends have said.
